Paul Frère, the racing driver and journalist, races at the wheel of his Ferrari D50 to a formidable second position, the first podium for a Belgian driver, at the end of the 1956 Belgian Grand Prix, held on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

After the first practice sessions on Thursday, Juan Manuel Fangio (Ferrari) was on pole position, more than five seconds ahead of Stirling Moss (Maserati). These times were not improved as it rained on Friday and Saturday. Frère was eighth in the fourth factory Ferrari entered.

Fangio and Moss were clearly ahead of the rest and fought for the lead in the pouring rain, but were delayed by mechanical problems and it was Peter Collins (Ferrari) who won ahead of the local driver Paul Frère, who had fought hard with Jean Behra, before the engine of his Maserati gave up the ghost.
