A green helmet in a red March
Henri Pescarolo is on the attack in his March 711 Ford, entered by Frank Williams, as it takes off over the undulating 22-kilometer, 176-turn Nürburgring circuit, during the 1971 German Grand Prix (pictured above). ‘Pesca’ and his green helmet are easily recognizable.
The French driver, who has not yet won at Le Mans, qualified in tenth position, the best March 711, Ronnie Peterson’s seventh on the grid. The Swede will finish fifth in a race dominated by the Tyrrells of Stewart and Cevert who finish in that order, while Pescarolo will be forced to retire on the 5th lap with broken suspension.
Frank Williams’s team was still a small outfit in 1971, and Frank was seriously underfunded. However, Henri Pescarolo did not disappoint, finishing 8th in Monaco, 4th in Great Britain (photo below), sixth in Austria, and scoring three championship points.
