Team Penske competed in the 2001 CART Championship with Gil de Ferran and Hélio Castroneves, and Reynard O1i-Hondas (pictured above). The two drivers each won three races, and the title went to Gil de Ferran, who was more consistent at the front.

In 2001, Roger Penske decided to return to the Indianapolis 500 after a five-year absence, despite the event being organized by the IRL. Two Dallara IR-01 Oldsmobile Aurora V8s were entered, and Team Penske achieved a magnificent one-two finish with Hélio Castroneves winning ahead of Gil de Ferran.

For Brazilian Hélio Castroneves it was the first of his four victories at the famous Brickyard, while his compatriot Gil de Ferran would have to wait until 2003 to finally win, again with Penske, the Indianapolis 500.
