Wolfgang von Trips at the wheel of his Ferrari 156 “Sharknose”, above during qualifying for the 1961 Monaco Grand Prix (the first of eight rounds of the 1961 F1 World Championship) negotiates the Loews hairpin, concentrating on his line, while Stirling Moss, on the right in the photo and assured of pole position, walks home.

Stirling Moss dominated the 100-lap race (!) in his Lotus 18-Climax, beating the much more powerful Ferrari 156s, which finished behind him in this order: Richie Ginther (2nd), Phil Hill (3rd) and Wolfgang von Trips (4th). The championship was off to a good start.

A few months later, unfortunately, having won the Dutch and British Grand Prix in the meantime, and leading the championship, von Trips was killed at Monza (Italian Grand Prix) after a collision with Jim Clark, when he lost control of his Ferrari 156, plowed into the crowd and mowed down 15 spectators… and it was his teammate, the American Phil Hill, photo below, who was crowned.
