Winkelhock and his yellow March

In 1980, Manfred Winkelhock participated in nine rounds of the European Formula 2 Championship at the wheel of this March 802-BMW entered by the ICI Racing Team, with a third place at Enna-Pergusa as his best result.

We remember his spectacular crash at the wheel of this same yellow March 802 at the start of the season at Flugplatz on the Nürburgring rollercoaster where the German driver and his single-seater took off and did an incredible somersault which stopped against the rail, and from which he miraculously emerged unharmed!

Manfred Winkelhock later participated in 56 Grand Prix (47 starts) for the Arrows, ATS, Brabham and RAM teams. He scored two championship points, that don’t reflect his speed and bravery.
