Chris Amon (Ferrari Dino 246T V6), Jim Clark (Lotus 49T V8), Bruce McLaren (BRM P126 V12) and Frank Gardner (Brabham BT23D Alfa V8) shared the front row of the Tasman Cup championship round, held at Teretonga Park (New Zealand) on 27 January 1968.

On the second row were Denny Hulme (Brabham BT23-Cosworth) and Piers Courage (McLaren M4A-Cosworth).

The big news was the return of local boy Chris Amon, who hadn’t been seen in the Tasman Cup since 1964. The Kiwi had convinced his employer Ferrari to enter a car. It was the 166 Formula 2 car powered by a 2.4L Dino V6, as used in F1 by Ferrari in early 1966.

This race in the antipodes was won by Bruce McLaren (BRM, photo below) ahead of Jim Clark (Lotus), Chris Amon (Ferrari), Piers Courage (McLaren) and Denny Hulme (Brabham).
