Stewart enjoys the 003
At the 1971 Monaco Grand Prix, Jackie Stewart (Tyrrell) claimed a stunning pole position, over a second ahead of his front row companion Jacky Ickx and shot into an immediate lead from fast starting Jo Siffert in his BRM and Ickx aboard a Ferrari. (Picture above).
The brilliant Scot dominated the race in his new Tyrrell 003, and finished 25 seconds ahead of Ronnie Peterson’s March, who delighted the crowd with his spectacular driving style. Ickx finished third, more than 53 seconds behind.
The Tyrrell 003 is a Formula One racing car which was designed by chief engineer Derek Gardner and used in the 1971 and 1972 Formula One seasons. It is powered by the 3L V8 Ford-Cosworth engine. The 003 was effectively the same as the Tyrrell 001 with a redesigned nose section, longer wheelbase, and narrower monocoque.
Driven by Jackie Stewart, it debuted at the 1971 Spanish Grand Prix and won at the first attempt. Tyrrell and Stewart took advantage as Lotus and Ferrari struggled during the 1971 season and won 6 races (5 for Stewart and 1 for Cevert), with the Scot claiming his second World Championship.
