As a 10 year-old, i convinced my parents to take me to the Spa 1000 km of 1971. My hero, Jacky Ickx, in a tiny 3L Ferrari 312 PB, was up against the mighty Porsche 917 cars and their 5L engines.
He surely did not disappoint me. He was just fantastic as always, battling heroically as seen in this extraordinary picture, against the likes of Rodriguez and Siffert, leaving everybody behind.
Unfortunately, his team-mate Clay Regazzoni crashed heavily (picture-below) while battling in third position, leaving victory to the two John Wyer entered Gulf Porsche 917. My passion was born for good.
