Cheever participated in 143 F1 races (132 starts), driving for nine different teams from 1978 through 1989, without succeeding to win a Grand Prix. He, nevertheless, achieved 9 podiums and 70 career points.
In 1996, he formed his own IRL team, Team Cheever. They fielded a car for Cheever for much of its existence, but occasionally ran two cars, almost always for the Indianapolis 500. In 1998, Eddie Cheever won the Indianapolis 500, as both owner and driver (picture below), a great achievement.
