Brian Redman, born 9 March 1937, turned 86. The Brit participated in 15 Formula One Grand Prix, achieved one podium in the 1968 Spanish Grand Prix, finishing third in a Cooper-BRM, but above all, he was a truly great sports car racer. Aussie ace Warwick Brown said: “The best I ever raced was Brian Redman. As capable as Mario Andretti and a better thinker. A British gent. Butter wouldn’t melt, but put him in a race car, he was an animal.”

Brian Redman started 15 Formula 1 Grand Prix, bagging one podium – Jarama 1968 in a Cooper-BRM – and was also F5000 champion three years running, when the series was very competitive. He was hugely successful in sports cars, scoring so many outright wins. Impressive list here-below. A complete driver, and an immensely nice person.

Redman’s sports car wins:

Spa 1000 kms: 1968, 69, 70, 72. Daytona 24 Hours: 1970, ’76, ’80. Sebring 12 Hours: 1975, 1978. Nürburgring 1000 kms: 1969, 1973. Brands Hatch 1000kms: 1968, 1969. Monza 1000kms: 1969, 1973. Österreichring 1000kms : 1970, 1972. Watkins Glen: 6 Hours: 1969. Targa Florio: 1970 (picture below).
