Alessandro Zanardi is an Italian professional racing driver. He won the CART championship in 1997 and 1998. He also raced in Formula 1 from 1991 to 1994 and again in 1999. He drove for Jordan, Minardi, Lotus and Williams.
He returned to CART in 2001, but a major crash at the Lauzitsring resulted in the amputation of his legs. Nevertheless, he returned to racing less than 2 years after the accident, competing in the FIA World Touring Car Championship for BMW.
