What happened, Denny?

The 1971 Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix was held at the Österreichring on 15 August 1971. The 54-lap race was won by Swiss BRM driver Jo Siffert (picture below), after he started from pole position. It was the second (and last) F1 victory for ‘Seppi’. Emerson Fittipaldi finished second for Team Lotus and Brabham Tim Schenken came in a surprise third after a very solid race.

Picture above: Denny Hulme qualified in ninth position in his McLaren M19-Cosworth, but was forced to retire with a broken engine on lap 4. The 1967 World Champion from New-Zealand, had no other choice but park his car in a puddle of mud… Poor Denny.
