Very wet Tyrrells
Jean-Pierre Jarier and Derek Daly, teammates for the third time at Tyrrell, are in the middle of a battle during the 1979 US Grand Prix, the last round of the Formula 1 season, run on the Watkins Glen circuit (photo above).
For this final Grand Prix of the season, Ken Tyrrell entered three Tyrrell 009-Fords for his regular drivers Jean-Pierre Jarier and Didier Pironi, but also for the Irishman Derek Daly, while no fewer than thirty cars competed for 24 places on the grid.
The three Tyrrell boys managed to qualify for the race, but only Didier Pironi would see the finish line, in an excellent third place, behind the winner Gilles Villeneuve, who was dazzling in the rain, and René Arnoux, a good second in his Renault.
This Grand Prix would be the last for Jacky Ickx (disappointing at the wheel of the Ligier), Alex Ribeiro, Arturo Merzario and Hans-Joachim Stuck, while Didier Pironi (picture below) announced his move in 1980 to Ligier alongside Jacques Laffite, for an association full of promise.
