German driver Gerhard Mitter and his factory Porsche 908 lead a tight pack at the start of the 1968 Norisring 200 Miles (photo above), where a host of big names are present: Mitter, Siffert, Steinemann, Pilette, Hezemans, Piper, Elford… and many others will fiercely contest the victory, as the race boasts a generous prize purse. Unfortunately, Mitter will soon be forced to retire with a broken clutch.

Behind him we can see the green Ferrari 250 LM No. 07 entered by David Piper Racing for Brian Muir who will finish 14th, the black Ford GT40 of Paul Hawkins (15th) and the white Lola T70-Chevrolet of American Jackie Epstein (11th).

And it was David Piper who emerged victorious at the wheel of his green Ferrari 412P Berlinetta (photo below), which can also be seen in the photo above to the left of Mitter’s Porsche 908. He finished ahead of Dieter Quester in his BMW-entered Lola T110-BMW, and Jo Siffert in a Porsche 910 from the Hart Ski Racing Team.
