The Zhou surprise

First full-time Chinese driver in Formula 1 (with the Alfa Romeo F1 team) Guanyu Zhou, despite his lack of experience, surprised many in 2022, thanks to his solid performances and steady progression, during his first season at the pinnacle of the sport.

Valtteri Bottas, his team mate in the team managed by Fred Vasseur, was a natural leader and a mentor for the young rookie, and is well-placed to tell us about his qualities: “In the beginning of the season, when we were regularly scoring points, he was still learning so many things. After that, he grew tremendously through the year. He became fast, his feedbacks became more precise, and he became more confident.”

The Fin goes on: “There were qualifying sessions where he was in front of me. This proves he is fast. A first Formula 1 season is often difficult. You need to prove that you deserve your seat. He, very well, accomplished that mission. What is impressive, is the few mistakes he made. That’s exceptional for a rookie.”

Coming from a good racer like Bottas, these are great compliments indeed, and it’s true, Zhou, picture below between Bottas and test driver Kubica, was one of the revelations of the 2022 season. Now, he needs to confirm, because a second season is crucial in establishing a long-term career in F1.
