Alex Caffi is in the pit lane (pictured above) driving his Osella FA1 Alfa Romeo during rainy practice for the 1987 German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring.
The Osella team was seriously lacking in resources and the Osella FA1, far from being competitive, was fighting for the last places on the grid and Caffi, burdened with minor technical problems, could not do better than 26th on the grid and retired on the 17th lap with a broken engine.
Caffi remembers : “I did the whole season with Osella. Gabriele Tarquini joined me for two races and Franco Forini for three events. My best race of the 1987 season was in Monaco, as I managed to qualify 16th, which was incredible for an Osella (picture below). Unfortunately, I was forced to retire on lap 39 with electronic problems, which sums up a frustrating season for me, and for the team.”
