Belgian Jacky Ickx, driver for Scuderia Ferrari, won three Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1970 – Austria, Canada, Mexico – and became F1 for the second consecutive time world vice-champion, behind the regretted Jochen Rindt.

After Jochen Rindt’s fatal accident on September 5, 1970 at Monza, Jacky Ickx was the only driver who could mathematically surpass his points total to win the Formula 1 World Championship. No choice, he had to win the three last races. Following his fourth-place finish at Watkins Glen, due to a fuel problem, Rindt was posthumously crowned F1 World Champion.

Displaying great sportsmanship and remarkable elegance despite the defeat, Ickx said: “It’s better this way, I’m happy with the result. Rindt deserves the title. I wouldn’t have liked to beat him like that.”
