Ricciardo: “I know Seb well enough”
Daniel Ricciardo talks about Sebastian Vettel’s current situation, about his discussions with Ferrari and his departure from Renault to McLaren at the end of the season:
DR: “I know Seb well enough, we were team mates, I believe he is still hungry and competitive enough to want to continue. I like Seb. Obviously, I had him as a team-mate, but as a competitor he brings something to the sport.”
DR: “About Ferrari, we have been talking on and off since a few years, and these discussions continued until recently,” tells the Australian to CNN, “I will not deny these talks, but obviously they didn’t materialise.”
DR: “Why these talks didn’t succeed, honestly I don’t know, and I don’t really want to think about it. Everybody was saying I would perfectly fit at Ferrari, with my name, my back round etc… But I don’t won’t to fall in the trap of emotions, whatever the situation.”
DR: “I can see why Carlos (Sainz) suits the team. So I dont tell myself ‘why not me ?’. I just tell myself Carlos did a very good 2019 season. He’s in fashion at the moment. And I imagine he just fits perfectly in the current Ferrari situation.”
DR: “Why did I decide to leave Renault ? Well, I imagine that no decision is black or white. And I cannot give you a black or white answer, in fact. The discussions with McLaren go back to 2018, I believe, and were ongoing. I cannot pinpoint what exactly made me leave, it’s not a decision taken lightly, it just felt right.”
