Rathmann outraces Ward

Jim Rathmann (1928-2011), was an American race car driver. He qualified this Lindsey Hopkins owned Epperly-Offy in 20th (picture above) at a 4-lap average of 143.140mph, for the 1958 Indianapolis 500 where he finished 5th.
Two years later, at the 1960 Indianapolis 500, glory was around the corner. Rathmann ran in the front the entire race. From the midway point on, he and Rodger Ward were locked in a neck and neck duel for first. Tire wear became an issue as the race evolved and Rathmann was able to preserve his fresh tires and outrace Ward to the finish (picture below).
