In 1979, Teddy Yip, an Indonesian-Dutch businessman who was instrumental in developing Macao as a tourist destination, helped fund the Ensign team, but the car was not a success.

Picture above: Marc Surer (Ensign N179 Cosworth) talking to team owner Teddy Yip, in the rainbow-coloured car, at the 1979 US Grand Prix East at Watkins Glen, where he had to retire.

The Ensign N179 was first driven by Derek Daly (picture below), but he soon left the team, then by Patrick Gaillard and Marc Surer but none of them succeeded to score a point, all season.
