Poor safety

Here is an excellent shot of A.J. Foyt by Jim Nise, at Trenton in 1962. A.J. started 2nd in his Epperly-Offy and won the 100-miler. Watch the drivers’ position and exposure. For the spectators, it was a joy to have such a good view of the driver and his efforts to control his machine, but safety was hardly existant…

In addition of his four Indy 500 victories (a record) and his win at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans (with Dan Gurney, driving a Ford), A.J. Foyt’s holds the record of most USAC wins, with 138 (!) victories. A true legend of American motorsport.
