No way!
The 1970 edition of the 12 Hours of Sebring was nearly won by the Solar Productions-entered Porsche 908 driven by Steve McQueen (driving with a broken foot, caused by a motorbike accident) and Peter Revson.
But the idea of witnessing a film star (McQueen), actually preparing the filming of the ‘Le Mans’ movie, winning at Sebring was unbearable for Mario Andretti, who begged team principal Peter Schetty to let him drive the Ferrari 512S of Giunti-Vaccarella, after his own car driven by Arturo Merzario, was forced to retire.
Driving like his life depended on it, Super Mario caught all his rivals, including Steve McQueen (picture below), who was driving about 4 seconds a lap slower than his team mate Revson, and won the race, most probably screaming ‘no way!’ in his helmet!
