Only Peruvian
He’s the only Peruvian racing driver to accomplish an international career, even though Jorge Koechlin was of German origin. He debuted in Formula Ford in Great-Britain in the 70’s before moving to the F3, then to Formula Renault Europe and finally up to F2, without great success, lacking sufficient funds.
Very passionated and capable of motivating sponsors in his country, he even raced in F1 in the British Aurora series at the wheel of a Williams FW07 in 1982 (picture above), with a pole position at Brands Hatch and a second place at Donington, as best results.
He then tried his luck in the USA, was seen in IndyCar at the wheel of an Eagle at Laguna Seca as well as in the IMSA. Koechlin proved to be very talented with a microphone in his hand (picture below), and became a media personality, commenting the Formula 1 Grand Prix in Spanish for ESPN, and becoming editor of a specialised and very popular magazine in Latin America.
