John Surtees, driving his Honda RA301, overtakes Dan Gurney in his McLaren M7A for third place on the final lap of the 1968 US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. Note Gurney’s full-face helmet (picture-above).
The race consisted of 108 laps and was won by Jackie Stewart in a Matra. Note: this event saw Mario Andretti’s Grand Prix debut with Lotus, and the American immediately took pole position, but was forced to retire on lap 12 due to a broken clutch.
John Surtees, the 1964 F1 World Champion, driving the Honda RA301 (photo below), started ninth, made a magnificent comeback, passed Gurney on the last lap, and achieved his last podium in Formula 1 that day.
