When the 40-year old Graham Hill (picture above) won the 1969 Monaco Grand Prix, it was his fifth triumph at Monte-Carlo. It was also his 14th Formula 1 Grand Prix victory, and would be the last, although he would score his sixth non-championship F1 win at Silverstone in 1971.
The 80-lap race was thus won by the two-time world champion (1962-1968), driving a works Lotus 49B-Ford, after he started from fourth position. It was Hill’s fifth Monaco win, a record that would stand for 24 years, until it was surpassed by the great Ayrton Senna. It was also the first win for a driver wearing a full face helmet (picture below) in Formula One.
