The Benetton thrived in the altitude of the Mexico circuit: after Gerhard Berger’s triumph in 1986 (picture above), his successor Thierry Boutsen nearly repeated the exploit in 1987 (picture here under).
Indeed, the Belgian was leading the race comfortably, in front of the Williams-Honda of Nigel Mansell, when the Ford V6 turbo started to misfire and Boutsen had to concede victory.
He will have to wait another two years before braking his duck in the pouring rain of the Canadian Grand Prix aboard a Williams-Renault.
