Ghinzani down-under
Piercarlo Ghinzani (born 16 January 1952) is a former racing driver from Italy. A competent racer, he never got the chance to drive a truly competitive car in F1. He currently manages his own racing team, Team Ghinzani, which was created in 1992 and is involved in several Formula 3 championships.
Piercarlo Ghinzani raced for Toleman at the 1985 Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide (picture above) where he was forced to retire, like in all seven outings with the Benetton-livered Toleman TG185, that was so unreliable.
He entered 111 Grand Prix (74 starts), rarely in competitive cars, and scored two career points only. Ghinzani, always looking for a drive and taking any seat proposed, raced for Osella Squadra Corse from 1981 to 1985, for Toleman in the second half of 1985, for Osella in 1986, then for Ligier (1987), Zakspeed (1988) and again Osella in 1989.
