Mike Hawthorn has just won the 1953 French Grand Prix at the Reims-Gueux circuit driving his Ferrari 500 (photo above), and thus becomes the first Briton to win a Formula 1 race counting towards the world championship.

The race consisted of 60 laps for a total of 500 kilometers, and saw a formidable battle between the Maserati of Argentinian Juan Manuel Fangio and the Ferrari of Englishman Mike Hawthorn who exchanged the lead several times per lap!

In the end, it was Hawthorn (Ferrari 500) who won by a hair’s breadth ahead of Fangio (Maserati A6GCM), González (Maserati) and Ascari (Ferrari), the first four being separated by only 4 seconds at the finish line!
