Jacky Ickx passes the wheel of his Ferrari 312PB to team mate Brian Redman, at the 6 Hours of Vallelunga in 1973 (picture above). That year, we witnessed an epic battle for the World Championship of Makes between Matra and Ferrari, with Mirage and Porsche further behind. Most of the time, as here in Italy, the Matra-Simca MS670B had the upper hand over the Ferrari 312PB.
Here at Vallelunga, Cevert’s Matra engine blew around mid- distance. He was then requested to join Pescarolo and Larrousse in the second Matra, and the trio claimed victory (picture-below) in front of the 3 works Ferrari’s. Ickx and Redman, the fastest pairing of the Scuderia, finished 3rd this time, behind the sister car of Schenken and Reutemann.
