Helmut Marko appears to be struggling to climb the banking and reach his Porsche 917K, which had broken down at the top of the banked section, at Daytona in 1971 (photo above). During the race, this 917K Martini, entered by the Salzburg Racing Team, will hit the wall at high speed, resulting in the retirement of both Helmut Marko and Rudi Lins.

The 1971 24 Hours of Daytona took place at the 6.132 km Daytona International Speedway and counted towards the World Sportscar Championship. Pedro Rodriguez, for whom it was already his fourth victory in Florida, and Jackie Oliver won their Gulf-liveried Porsche 917K of JWA Engineering.

A fierce battle took place between the Gulf and Martini Porsche 917Ks, up against the NART Ferrari 512Ss and the beautiful Penske-White Racing 512M. Rodriguez-Oliver (Porsche 917K) thus won by a lap over Bucknum-Adamowicz (NART Ferrari 512S Spyder, photo below) and Donohue-Hobbs (Penske-White Ferrari 512M).
