We all sadly remember the first of May 1994. The death of Ayrton Senna, arguably the greatest driver of them all, reminds us violently of the beauty of life and its great fragility. We are also reminded how everything can be over, in a split second.

Picture above: Ayrton Senna walks back to the pits, after retiring from the 1994 Pacific Grand Prix in Aida. How much we all wish he had been able to do the same in Imola…

Fatal accidents are rare nowadays, thanks to the massive safety improvements brought to the cars through the years, but danger is always there, and is inherent to motor racing, we should never forget that.

Ayrton Senna was well aware of that, he once said: “These things bring you to reality as to how fragile you are; at the same moment you are doing something that nobody else is able to do, that you are seen as the best, the fastest and somebody that cannot be touched, you are extremely fragile.”
