A 200 miles race was organised on the dusty road circuit of Riverside, California, 50 miles East of Los Angeles, in October 1964. Jim Clark (Lotus 30) qualified on pole.
Also during the 1964 season, Jim Clark, the reigning F1 World Champion, came within a few laps of retaining his crown, but an engine oil leak robbed him of the title, that went to John Surtees (Ferrari). He was the dominant force in motor racing, and a year later, was crowned F1 World Champion for the second time.
Unfortunately for him, here at Riverside, Clark lead most of the laps before he suffered mechanical problems late in the race, and Parnelli Jones won in his Cooper King Cobra-Ford (picture here-under).
