Jacky Ickx places his Ferrari 312PB next to Vic Elford’s Martini-Porsche 917K on the front row of the 1971 Monza 1000 km starting grid (pictured above).
The Belgian driver has a near-impossible mission. At the wheel of his small car, powered by its 3-liter flat-12, he must battle (along with his teammate Clay Regazzoni) the Porsche 917 and Ferrari 512, equipped with super-powerful 5-liter engines, on a fast circuit.
No miracle in the race, on the 11th lap Ickx was forced to retire, and it was the Gulf-Porsche 917k of the JW Automotive team that won the event at an average speed of 235.8 km/h.
Ranking:
- Rodriguez-Oliver, Porsche 917k.
- Siffert-Bell, Porsche 917k +3 tours.
- of Adamich-Pescarolo, Alfa Romeo T33/3 +6 laps.
