Swiss endurance specialist Herbert Müller, seen here in his own Ferrari 512M, leads US-based German Lothar Motschenbacher and his McLaren M8D at the Mid-Ohio round of the 1971 Can-Am Championship.

Lothar Motschenbacher, born October 7, 1938 in Germany, is a former racing driver who spent most of his career in North America, particularly in the Can-Am series. Although he never won a race, he was consistent and achieved several podium finishes. He has also been seen in F5000 and endurance racing.

Here at Mid-Ohio, Jackie Stewart won in his Lola T260-Chevrolet entered by Carl Haas Racing (photo below), ahead of Jo Siffert and his Porsche 917/10 entered under the STP-Jo Siffert banner, while Herbert Müller could do no better than fourth with his surprising 512M entered by him, among the big-engined prototypes of the Can-Am championship. Motschenbacher, for his part, was forced to retire.
