Maiden pole!
George Russell stormed to a maiden Formula 1 pole position by producing a sensational lap in Q3 for the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix, and beat the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz by 0.044s.
Very impressive all season, with four podiums and a series of strong point finishes, Russell always kept his cool in a season that for his team’s standards, can be described is “challenging”, and is currently fifth in the standings with 143 points. A first Grand Prix victory for the young Brit is coming soon.
Asked if a title challenge was still possible, Toto Wolff, AMG-Mercedes team principal told Sky F1: “It’s so difficult to say because we are a very big points gap behind Max (Verstappen), but then you can see how quickly things change in F1, anyhow we will never give up. I wouldn’t discount anything if we were able to win tomorrow.”
