The 1960 Portugal Grand Prix was held at Porto, on an urban race track with pavement portions (picture above), not far from the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean.
Rookie in Formula One that year, the multiple motorcycling world champion John Surtees impressed greatly by capturing pole position and leading 36 out of the 55 race laps, before being forced to retire, due to his works Lotus 18 overheating.
Colin Chapman’s Team Lotus (picture here-under with his two drivers) entered another rookie in Porto: young Jim Clark, only eighth in practice but third in the race, and so capturing his first podium finish, alongside winner Jack Brabham and second placed Bruce McLaren, both driving a Cooper.
