A massive crowd is present on the market square of Brescia, at the start of the 1954 Mille Miglia, the great road classic race of the 50’s.
It will be an Italian triumph with the victory of Alberto Ascari in a Lancia D24 (#602), seen here in between his team mates Eugenio Castellotti (#540) and Gino Valenzo (#541), who will win while beating the Ferrari 500 Mondial of Vittorio Marzotto and the Maserati A6GCS of Luigi Musso.
The Commendatore Enzo Ferrari was not frequently seen on race tracks, but he was faithful to the Mille Miglia (picture here-under), until the race was condemned after the terrible accident in 1957 of Alfonso de Portago who claimed the lives of 14 persons…
