30 years ago, on this day, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna collided during the Japanese Grand Prix 1989 at Suzuka.

This race would become one of the most notorious in Formula 1 history, as the culmination of these two great champions rivalry at McLaren.

This collision on lap 46 decided the championship in favor of Alain Prost. While the Frenchman abandoned his stalled car, Senna restarted his, made a pit stop to change his damaged front wing, drove a storming race and overhauled Nannini’s Benetton to take victory.

Later, Senna was controversially disqualified for using the chicane’s escape road to rejoin the track, handing the title to Prost.

The unsolved question remains 30 years later : did Prost provoke the collision ?
