Elio de Angelis’s debut Formula One season was in 1979 with Shadow. He finished 7th in his maiden Grand Prix in Argentina.
He had a solid season and at the season’s final at Watkins Glen, he scored 3 points for fourth place, finishing 15th in the championship.
De Angelis’s performance with Shadow caught the eye of Lotus boss Colin Chapman, who hired him to partner Mario Andretti in 1980.
His career was launched.
