John Watson is about to start the Austrian Grand Prix 1976,

and two hours later, after a fantastic and storming race in difficult conditions, win his first Grand Prix and the first and only win for Team Penske in Formula 1.

For Roger Penske, famous team-owner known as ‘The Captain’, it must be an emotional moment … he most probably has a thought for Mark Donohue, his driver and friend who lost his life at the same track, just 12 months ago.

Jacques Laffite finished second in the Ligier-Matra after a very exciting race, with Swede Gunnar Nilsson third in a Lotus-Ford.

James Hunt, title candidate, finished fourth in his McLaren-Ford, having started from pole.
