Monza Banking

Such a special atmosphere and beautiful photo above of a Ferrari, probably Willy Mairesse, speeding past on the banking, see how high and steep it is, of the Autodromo Nationale di Monza, well above a Fiat 500, during the 1960 Italian Grand Prix.

The Monza banking refers to the banked concrete corners of the former Autodromo Nationale di Monza race track, built in 1955 with a bank angle of up to 38°. These dangerous corners, used in F1 until 1961, are now a historical monument located in the park surrounding the actual circuit.

The tifosi were spoiled in 1960, as three of the four Ferraris entered monopolized the podium, and it was the American Phil Hill who won ahead of his compatriot Richie Ginther and the fiery Belgian Willy Mairesse, an excellent third (picture below). To be noted, 1960 was the last season for the front-engined Ferraris, soon to be replaced by the glorious 156 Sharknose.
