Jean-Pierre Beltoise, pictured above at the wheel of his Matra F2 car, weighted to be allowed to participate in the 1968 South African Formula 1 Grand Prix at the Kyalami circuit. The Frenchman finished sixth… three laps behind the winner (Clark), thus scoring a point in the championship.

This South African Grand Prix took place on January 1, 1968, and saw the Grand Prix debuts of South African Basil van Rooyen (Cooper-Climax) and Italian Andrea de Adamich (Ferrari), but these two rookies were forced to retire in the race, due to mechanical issues.

Jim Clark (Lotus) was imperious, winning this race from pole position. For the double (1963-1965) world champion it was to be his last Grand Prix victory, three months before his fatal accident during an F2 race at Hockenheim.
