Don’t need any help!

Jochen Mass, who had just gone off the track on the first lap of the race at the first left-hand corner of the Zolder circuit, appears to be refusing the help of a marshal who came to assist him in getting out of the cockpit of his Arrows A3 during the 1980 Belgian Grand Prix (photo above). Note the stylish Simpson helmet worn by the German driver.

The race was won by Didier Pironi at the wheel of his Ligier JS11-15 Cosworth. It was the first Grand Prix victory for the promising French driver who, after a learning season at Tyrrell, had moved to Ligier. The Frenchman beat the Williams cars of Jones and Reutemann, the overwhelming favorites, who both finished on the podium.

No luck, however, for the Arrows drivers, Jochen Mass and Riccardo Patrese, who retired after going off the track and great joy for Guy Ligier, whose team won its fifth Grand Prix. Picture below: Great start for Pironi (Ligier), who leads Jones (Williams) and Laffite (Ligier) into the first corner.
