Jochen Rindt and Graham Hill, the two Team Lotus teammates, appear to be giving each other no favours at the wheel of their Lotus 49B (pictured above), during the Dutch Grand Prix, held at Zandvoort on June 21, 1969.

Jochen Rindt, who started from pole position, and Graham Hill, third on the grid, were indeed battling for the lead at the start of the race, under the watchful eye of Jackie Stewart, who later told Motorsport magazine that he was “surprised to see them fighting like that, with the race still long.”

Both Lotus drivers were forced to retire, and Jackie Stewart won in his Matra MS80-Ford ahead of Jo Siffert’s private Lotus 49 and Chris Amon’s Ferrari 312. With this new victory, Stewart with 27 points, had already taken a significant lead in the world championship, which he would go on to win hands down.
