It was at the Watkins Glen round at the end of the 2005 season that Dan Wheldon, driving his Dallara-Honda IR-05 for the Andretti Green team, won the IndyCar title, with one race still remaining on the calendar.

Dan Wheldon (1978–2011) was an English racing driver. He won the IndyCar Series in 2005 (pictured above) and the Indianapolis 500 in 2005 and 2011. Sadly, Wheldon was the victim of a fatal accident during the round held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 16, 2011.

His first IndyCar victory came in 2004 at the Twin Ring Motego in Japan. Two more victories followed that year, and Dan finished second in the championship, behind Tony Kanaan.

2005 became a year of great success: he won six races, including the legendary Indianapolis 500 and the championship, before moving to Chip Ganassi in 2006 and winning two races. He now was an established star in the USA.
