Jackie Stewart had decided, early in the season 1973, this would be his last year of racing. He kept this decision secret, not wanting his wife Helen to suffer while counting the races down. The death of so many drivers and friends, amongst them Clark and Rindt, had been too heavy…
After a career of 99 F1 starts, three Formula 1 World Championships won and 27 Grand Prix wins (a record at the time), Jackie Stewart retired in sadness, with the death of team mate and friend François Cevert, during practice for the last race of the season at Watkins Glen, having won the 1973 World Championship.
