Nico Rosberg: “Becoming champion”
Nico Rosberg, born 27 June 1985, is a German and Finnish former racing driver. He competed in Formula One from 2006 to 2016, winning the World Drivers’ Championship in 2016 with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team.
Thankful, Nico Rosberg declared: “No matter how good a driver you are, you have to have the right car and right team behind you in order to succeed.”
The only child of Finnish 1982 Formula One World Champion Keke Rosberg, he was raised primarily in the Principality of Monaco in an international environment, and is fluent in German, English, French, Italian,…
Between 2006, and his first F1 start for Williams and his surprise retirement after Abu Dhabi 2016, Nico took 206 F1 starts, won 23 Grand Prix, scored 57 podiums, 30 pole positions and 1594.5 championship points.
On why he retired at just 31, days after his hard fought world F1 title, Nico Rosberg answered: “Since 25 years of racing, it has been my dream, my ‘one thing’, to become Formula One World Champion. Through the hard work, the pain, the sacrifices, this has been my target, and now I’ve made it. I have climbed my mountain, I am on the peak, so this feels right.”
For this last and decisive race of the 2016 season, I travelled to Abu Dhabi and was very fortunate to witness the crowning of Nico Rosberg. One can recognise the author of this article, at the very centre of the picture below, next to Nico’s green glove. An unforgettable experience.
