Innes Ireland, larger-than-life

Innes Ireland (1930-1993) was a British military officer, an engineer, and a motor racing driver. He was the winner of just one Formula One Grand Prix (Watkins Glen 1961 in a Lotus), but of eight non-championship F1 races… He was appreciated by all, and was known for his great sense of humour… he was a larger-than-life character.
Picture above: Dutch soldiers helping him push his Lotus 25 back on track in free practice for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort in 1965. He finished the race in 10th position, two laps down on winner Jim Clark in a Lotus-Climax (picture below).
