Johnny Rutherford is an American former racing driver. Born in Kansas on 12 March 1938, he later moved to ForthWorth, Texas and became “Lone Star JR” (reference to the Texan flag, see his helmet design on the picture below, taken at Indianapolis in 1974).

An IndyCar legend, in a career that spanned more than three decades, he scored 27 wins and 23 pole positions in 314 starts. He is one of the few drivers to win the Indianapolis 500 three times, winning in 1974, 1976 and 1980. He also won the CART championship in 1980.

The great champion showed a great sense of dry humour when he declared: “The walls are white, the track is grey, the grass is green, and the sky is blue… Your job (as a driver) is to keep them all where they belong.”
