In 1978, Didier Pironi joins the Tyrrell team (then sponsored by French oil giant Elf), where he learns the ropes of Formula 1 alongside fellow Frenchman Patrick Depailler, present in the team since 1974.

His team leader wins the 1978 Monaco Grand Prix and finishes fifth in the standings with 34 points, while Pironi shows flashes of brilliance as a rookie in F1, but scores 7 points only.

That same year, and despite his employer Ken Tyrrell being less than thrilled, Didier Pironi participates in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with veteran Jean-Pierre Jaussaud in an Alpine-Renault prototype. The pair scores an historic victory for the French manufacturer.
